What Is BOPARC?
BOPARC stands for the Board Of Park And Recreation Commissioners. BOPARC was formed in 1981 by emergency ordinance within the meaning of Section 2.14 of the Charter of the City of Morgantown after the disbandment of the Monongalia County Consolidated Recreation Commission. BOPARC is governed by a seven member Board appointed by City Council and managed by a professional administrator, associated supervisory staff and support staff. We also hire anywhere from 50-70 part-time and seasonal employees to assist with seasonally specific aspects of our operations. These employees are temporary in nature and are normally high school and college students looking for seasonal opportunities, short-term and flexible employment.
Mission
BOPARC's mission is to provide quality recreational services, spaces and experiences that inspire community
engagement, connection and an appreciation for the natural world.

Did you know that BOPARC commissioned a Case Study via a grant in 2016 that resulted in the downloadable document below? This study details many of the challenges that we face with severely aging facilities as well as highlights the many recreational opportunities available to community members right here in Morgantown. It is informative reading for anyone interested in their parks and recreational facilities. You can scroll through the document on this page as well as download it for later reading:
We did an update to this case study as a pocket illustration in 2023. A downloadable copy of that document can be found below:
