General Mowing Information
- How often we cut the grass varies according to the type of land, the weather, and the condition of the area being mowed. For example, spring weather does normally interfere with our mowing schedule to a great extent and with June being unpredictable in terms of hot weather vs. rain, we do have some challenges as the season progresses. We try to stay on a set mowing schedule in which areas are addressed once per week weather permitting.
- Areas of some parks are set aside for young trees and may not be cut as often or not at all.
- The grass may not be cut as often if we have a very dry spell as the grass doesn’t grow as quickly.
- We don't you sweep up all the cuttings after mowing, but we do make every attempt at cleanup of our sidewalks and in front of our facilities.
- We don't use mowers that collect the grass mainly because these mowers are cost prohibitive and slower. The grass collection boxes need regular emptying so collection and disposal of the clippings would also come into play.
- We try to clean up large amounts of litter prior to mowing and we do have regular litter pick up in our parks.
- We do generally start mowing work early in the day, (normally between 6:00 and 6:30AM). We do this in order to mow before the parks become busy and to allow our crews to move onto other assignments. This practice reduces safety risks to members of the public, ensures that our crews are not as hindered by heavy traffic and has proven to be a faster way of completing mowing in general. As a result, our parks look better and park activities are not as impacted by mid-day mowing.
- We have a lot of grass to cut and a very tight schedule. Unless conditions are very bad we cut the grass in all weathers. Grass is very resilient and quickly recovers from minor smearing or surface damage.
Caperton Trail Permits for Runs and Walks
Notice to all groups and organizations who use the trails for walk, bike and run events. BOPARC facilitates trail walks and runs for various organizations and does so by scheduling such events on our master calendar in order to avoid duplication of planned routes and organize our own maintenance staff for litter sweep and post event inspection. We ask that groups clean up after themselves and that organizers keep us informed of planned events, routes, schedule changes and planned participation numbers.
Due to the popularity of the trails, trail heads and parks surrounding the trails
for purposes of such events, it is necessary for groups hosting larger events (over 50 people) on and along the trails to apply for a permit to adjoining BOPARC facilities when applicable. Such facilities and trail areas include (but may not be limited to): Marilla Park, White Park, Hazel Ruby McQuain Park and Amphitheatre. The cost of the permit will be based on the average cost of the facility affected by the trail use.
For instance, should a group be utilizing the trail area at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park for race start and end, the Amphitheatre rental cost would serve to cover the permit for the time period of the race. The permit charge is necessary for larger events because the rental space available to the public is not available during such events due to the feasibility of a private rental being conducted
while a large scale race, charity walk or other such event is taking place.
